Unit 1 - The Media Giants

 
Disney: 


Disney was created by Walt Disney, he has created some of the best loved cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse which he created in 1932. As well as other popular characters like Snow white and Peter Pan.
He has been responsible for some of the most successful animated films such as Peter Pan, The Jungle Book and Pinocchio.
Disney have used many forms of media to sell their products. Venturing into film, music, books and parks and resorts.

TV: Mickey Mouse (2013)

The Mickey Mouse TV series is an American animated series and features many characters from the original series including; Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto and Minnie Mouse.

 
Movie: Disney Pixar's Up 
Created in 2009, Disney Pixar's Up was made by the creators of some of Disney's most successful films, this led to its popularity around the world.  The film centres on an elderly widowed man called Carl Fredricksen and a young Wilderness explorer called Russell. By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfil his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America and to complete a promise made to his lifelong love. 
 

Written works (magazine/newspaper): Disney press

Disney press produces books that are mainly aimed at children and teenagers. These books are based on popular Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck as well as books based on Disney owned franchises such as The Muppets and books based on some of the TV shows on the Disney channel network.

The first Disney store was opened in California in 1987, in 1990 two more stores opened; one in London and another in California. These stores were opened to allow people to buy officially licensed Disney products all from one place. Several stores around the word have been opened since and for the majority of the time have been very successful due to the appeal of many of their popular characters.

Whilst branching out into all forms of media, Disney have also gained ownership of other companies that have done this. Some of the companies include Marvel entertainment, ESPN Inc., Lucasfilm studios and the ABC entertainment group. This has resulted in Disney expanding their success and popularity around the world.
News corp: 

News corp are one of the big five media companies that own a large amount of different media products that are available all over the world. They own three of the biggest selling newspapers in England, as well as The New York post and The Wall street journal in America. They also own one of the biggest TV companies in America, Fox.
Fox is an American broadcasting company which owns popular TV programmes such as The Simpsons, Family Guy, New girl and American dad. Because of these shows Fox has become one of the most popular TV channels in America, and many of their shows have been broadcast all over the world. Fox have since branched out in to other forms of media in order to appeal to a more mass market including the Internet and Printed works.


Movie: Dodgeball: A true underdog story (2004)

Dodgeball: A true underdog story, is based around the owner of Average Joe's gym Peter Lafleur, and the owner of a rival gym Globgym called White Goodman. Peter has to raise funds to keep his gym open, to do this Peter and his employees enter a Dodgeball tournament. However, after learning they are competing, White Goodman, owner of Globogym decides to compete, so his competition go out of business. This leads to the two teams meeting in the final in a fight for their business.

TV: Fox broadcasting company - The Simpsons
The Simpsons is an animated sit-com owned by fox, it has been on the air since 1989 and remains one of the most popular TV shows all over the world. It is focused around a working class family in a fictional American town called Springfield. The series has had 25 seasons and 1 movie. It has been nominated for 174 awards winning 123 of them. Some of their most notable achievements have been being nominated for a Golden globe and winning 16 Prime time Emmy awards.

The Wall street journal is a newspaper that is published six days a week in New York City as well as Asian and European editions. The Journal primarily covers areas such as the American economy and worldwide business topics, as well as financial news and issues. Its name comes from Wall Street, located in New York City, it has been printed continuously since its introduction on July 8, 1889. The newspaper version has won the Pulitzer Prize thirty-four times, including 2007 prizes for its reporting on backdated stock options and the adverse effects of China's booming economy.

One of Fox's websites is based solely around one of their TV shows The Simpsons. This website tells you everything you need to know about the show. It gives you facts and information about the series, clips and full episodes, recaps on what happened in each episode, information on the characters, the community (where to find them on Facebook/Twitter), downloads for computer wallpapers and a shop for its merchandise.



Fox

Time Warner:

Time Warner is one of the leading American media companies that is successful across all fields of media. It owns one of the most popular television networks, Warner Brothers television who's shows are broadcast all across the world. These include; The Big bang theory, Two and a half men, Mike and Molly and The Middle. It also has its own website which shows everything they offer with a cable subscription, and show what the offer in every form of media.
Time Warner are also the owners of Time magazine which is one of the most popular magazines in America. Time Warner have also branched out into other kinds of media including; box office films and video games.



Movie: I am legend


I am legend is a post apocalyptic Sci-Fi horror film starring Will Smith. The film tells the story from the point of view of Military lieutenant Robert Neville, who is the only person in New York City and possibly the world. Set in 2012, a genetically engineered virus intended to cure cancer has killed 90% of humanity. With the remaining people becoming similar to vampires. Each day Neville broadcasts on radio in a desperate attempt to find other people and experiments with rats to try to find a cure to the virus.


TV: CBS's The Big bang theory

The Big bang theory is an American sit-com that is based around five main characters, four scientists; Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard who are all socially awkward scientists and their neighbour Penny, who contrast the four scientist's social skills to comedic effect.





Written works: Time magazine

Time magazine is one of the most successful magazines in America it covers the weeks news from all around the world. It includes the world's biggest stories to more good-news stories. The magazine has been running for 90 years and has had many different editions published in other parts of the world. Including a Europe edition, Asia edition and formerly a Canadian edition.

This website shows you what you will get with a subscription to TimeWarnercable, this includes which channels this offers, and which TV shows are broadcast on these channels. As well as on demand, pay per view and apps. It offers different packages which depend on which channels you want, as this can be suited to you (e.g. sports packages, movies and full packages).
